🌲 About the Mickelson Trail
The George S. Mickelson Trail is a 109-mile crushed-limestone trail that stretches through the heart of the Black Hills. Built on a historic railroad corridor, it offers a smooth, gradual grade that’s ideal for riders of all skill levels.
You’ll ride through:
- Scenic forests and open meadows
- Historic mining towns
- Over 100 converted railroad bridges
- Rock tunnels carved through granite
It’s one of the most unique and accessible trail systems in the region—perfect for a relaxed, point-to-point ride.
🚴 What to Expect
- Easy-to-Moderate Terrain
The trail features gentle grades (never too steep), making it approachable for most riders. - Packed Gravel Surface
The crushed limestone surface is smooth but not paved—best suited for comfort, hybrid, or gravel bikes. - Remote Sections
Some stretches are more secluded with limited services, so plan accordingly. - Wildlife & Changing Conditions
You may encounter wildlife and shifting weather—part of the Black Hills experience! - Trail Pass Required
A trail pass is required for riders 12+. This is included with our rentals. Riders with their own bikes can buy a pass at our shop, other local vendors, or the self-service stations along the route.
It’s all about enjoying the journey—take your time, soak in the scenery, and ride at your own pace.
